Reply 2025: Urban Care Workers

2025

When someone ask, ”What value does physical work have for public life? How are trust and emotion established between oneself and others or a space? “--it seems they are also asking,“Is love still important for everyone? How does it come about? ”

David Graeber, in his book Bullshit Jobs, divides jobs into two categories: one is the meaningless jobs that many people are doing, the other is the work that really necessary for society but no one wants to do, like sanitation work and toilet cleaning. This latter type is called "Care Work" --the kind that "Rag God Workshop" reminds people to notice. It is equivalent to the household affairs of the entire city. In fact, these workers take care of the city and maintain its operation every day.

This workshop focuses on people who touch the streets, walls, and facilities in the ROCKBUND area most frequently- the workers doing street cleaning, toilet cleaning, garbage disposal, and security job. Combining with the theme "Shanghai Picnic" of RAMa, we invited public participants to collaborate with the urban care workers near the ROCKBUND to create cushions which were placed on the plaza. The materials for the co-creation are from the old rags collected by the participants, the unused fabrics brought by the participants, and old rags provided by the Cleaning Company of ROCKBUND. There are 15 cushions, each telling the story of a cleaner. The cushions are interconnected with yellow ribbons and on them are the questions raised by public participants to the care workers.

Care work is the expression of love. People communicate with each other in the scene of joint labor, feel the existence of each other's lives and evoke the public love. You ask who I am? And who are you? The answer is on the cushion.

The Birth of Rag God

image.png

2024

‘The Birth of Rag God’is a project with the theme of "Care", we invited participants and residents of Huashu Village in Nanjing to create a festival, trying to pull care work from private space to public space and celebrate it. During the workshop, women are the subject of feeling and action, and the village is the space for action. After two months, the "Rag God" was born under the joint work of the participants. In the summer, we held a ceremony named "The Birth of Rag God" in the village, and 100 rags made up of "rag God" came from the villagers doing housework (most of them are women).

More than 40 participants in the workshop paid labor for the creation of the Rag God. Care work is an expression of love, and it gives Rag God a soul. In this way, The power that had been scattered among the women gathered again.

The Rag God, nourished by the care work, is good at seeing the heart of the caregiver, and at awakening those precious feelings that are already present in the daily life and heart of each person, but are often invisible. This is an opportunity to connect women of different identities and backgrounds, and it is also a valuable community experiment led by women.

Being a New Person

2024

When we see dirty things become clean, messy things become smooth, new people have old breath, and old people have new aspirations, the idea of ‘Being a New Person‘ may appear, and then we have to answer three questions: What is a ‘person’? Why do we need to ‘be a new person’? What kind of person do you want to be?

There is also a path to becoming a new person in the return to daily life, the reinvent of memories, the care work with own body, the connection with strangers. Participants are invited to use their childhood clothes and toys to create a human sculpture.

  "Do not separate" co-create works

2024

This work is a discussion about home. We know that not every space people live in is a ‘home’, ‘home’ is not only a physical space, but also a kind of feeling. Sometimes it is hard to describe. Cups, bowls, plastic flowers, plates, egg cookers, towels and clothes. All the elements that appear in the work, they all carry each woman's self-writing of ‘home’.

I have selected and taken out objects they used and related to them from their homes, placed them together on a stranger's dining table (which was thrown away from the home by a man recently divorced), and curtains that I kept from my original home after my divorce hanging next to the dining table, pretending to be a wall of dining room , so as to create a sense of space for the dining room at homeWe brought together these objects from different homes and pretended that we were all in the same home together.

During the process, I am trying to ask what specific person, object, labor, or actions help us construct and maintain a sense or a feeling of home. What makes the traditional home facing the challenge of separation? What other forms might the family/home have in the future?

Mother's Choice Writing Project

2022-2026

People nowadays are generally faced with a personal dilemma – self-cognitive crisis, following by the confusion of living. I began to focus on motherhood experience because of the great confusion it brought me, it seemed that the experience of motherhood itself was both the problem and the answer to the general dilemma. The motherhood experience is a force against the world, trying to constantly link increasingly separated individuals in a continuous and repetitive work full of flaws and contradictions. The Mother's Choice writing project was launched against this background of vague and indescribable feelings and reflections, with the aim of building a connection between mothers and retracing their daily experiences together, identifying and revealing their energy through words, in search of possible solutions.

Awaking Project

2020-2021

I led the participants to explore the real individual life experience, explore the path for ordinary people to enter the creative life, and build the intimacy between people and themselves by introducing themselves for a long time and contacting the creation of specific materials. By sharing the process of contrast and transformation between individual experience and creation, I encourage participants to remove the "shell", re-open feelings and thinking, and build inner strength, like an "artist", or. Like a child, start doing it.
